A man has been shot dead by police in south London.

Officers said they were pursuing a "suspect vehicle" at about 21:50 BST on Monday and ended the chase by making "tactical contact" in Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham Hill.

The victim, believed to be in his 20s, was subsequently shot and died in hospital at about 00:15.

Efforts are under way to contact his family, the Met said, and the police watchdog is investigating.

Police cordons and road closures are in place.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said investigators had been sent to the scene to start gathering evidence.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all of those affected by this terrible incident," it said in a statement.

A 39-year-old man, who lives on nearby New Park Road, said the car drove along his street before turning into Kirkstall Gardens.

He said: "A police car came down Kirkstall Gardens and crashed into him.

"Another police car came in behind him and they had him locked in at the bottom of Kirkstall Gardens.

"The car was immobile when he was shot. The bang was really loud."
